This past summer, rugby was a part of the Olympics for the first time since 1924. Currently the second most popular sport in the world and the fastest growing sport here in the States, rugby is now in Bay Ridge! This past Summer, 20 of Bay Ridge's finest young men, ages 17-22, with rugby experience ranging from a few months to 8 years, formed a team and competed nearly every weekend in various tournaments around the tri-state area. It is our mission to grow as an organization, grow the sport within the community, and continue to represent Bay Ridge with pride.
How We Started
During my Jesuit high school experience at Xavier, the sport of rugby became what I love to do most. It has given me the chance to meet some of my best friends, as well as attain more values than I have in any classroom experience. Since I started playing at Clemson University last fall, many of my friends from Bay Ridge that I grew up with decided to take up the sport on their own. This gave me the idea to start our very own official Bay Ridge rugby team to have when we all came home for summer. After assembling about 20 guys, I went door to door to several local businesses that make the neighborhood what it is, and I received enough sponsorship money to get this whole thing in motion. After a very successful first summer playing nearly every weekend all around the tri-state area, it is our goal to continue growing the program and representing Bay Ridge for years come.
